Wind Ensemble to present ‘Circles of Light’ Rediger Chapel Auditorium | Boren Campus Center | Taylor University Free admission The Taylor University Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Al Harrison, will present “Circles of Light,” a concert that explores the many genres of concert band literature, including a variety of contemporary pieces. The SEGway News October 27, 2016 Rediger Chapel Auditorium located in the Boren Campus Center on Monday, November 14th at 7:30 pm. Selections to be performed include The Chronicles of Narnia, Inglesina March, Dance of the Comedians, Hymn of Brotherhood, Art and Industry, and Circles of Light. The percussion and clarinet sections will be featured in several of the compositions. Professional composer and music professor Dr. Todd Syswerda will guest- conduct his composition titled Art and Industry, composed in 2008 for the 30th anniversary celebration of the Marion Philharmonic Orchestra. The composition represents a celebration of the industrial period in Marion and the support of local industry for the symphony orchestra. This transcription for band is a recent edition, and this performance represents the premiere for the band arrangement. Dr. Syswerda is a lifelong resident of Grant County who studied music at Taylor University and the University of Colorado Boulder. He is currently a Professor of Music Composition at Indiana Wesleyan University. Another highlight of the concert is Circles of Light, a composition that combines influences from European and African sources including traditional harmony and African drumming. The program will include operatic duets from Offenbach’s The Tales of Hoffmann and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly as well as the famous aria, “Tu che di gel sei cinta” from Puccini’s Turandot. Additional repertoire includes French, German, English, and Chinese language art songs, plus a surprise ending! Eastbrook South’s 6th graders learned about and celebrated Mexico's holiday, The Day of the Dead this week. They compared the holiday to Halloween and made several crafts. Below are what some students had to say about the things they learned: “I really liked learn- ing about Day of the Dead with my class this week. It was very fun to learn about a topic I never knew much about. I loved drawing the beautifully designed skull and coming up with our own variations of it. I had so much fun with this great learning experience and a fun time doing crafts with my friends.” - Ella Crouch “I really enjoyed learning about the Day of the Dead, and making all the fun crafts. I really loved making the tissue paper marigolds, the flower that represents remembering our loved ones. This was very fun and I loved learning about the Day of the Dead.” - Tarren Kerschner The Taylor University Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo will present “An Evening of Jazz” on Thursday, November 17, at 7:30 pm. The public is invited to attend this free concert to be performed in the Butz Carruth Recital Hall located in Smith-Hermanson Music Center. A variety of big band selections representing sacred, traditional, and contemporary jazz will be included on the program. Compositions to be performed include Jumpin’ East of Java, Amazing Grace, Saving All My Love for You, Victory, Continued from 1 to many people from our area and the wider Indianapolis area. We have also had the benefit of a locally grown farmto-table business providing us with produce and meat of a quality and variety well beyond its time. We hope we can support any new enterprises that grow out of the Baby Elephant Walk, Battle Hymn of the Republic, The Surrey with the Fringe on Top, Don’t Get Around Much Anymore, and Sir Duke. Soloists will include Cameron Eckman, alto sax; Gardner Stewart, tenor sax; Anders Soderquist, bari sax; Caleb Grubb, trombone; Braden Ochs, trumpet; Zach Hensel, piano; and Joshy Kongmaneechachawal, guitar.
