Greenways Programs continue to work towards a more connected community
By Cathy Kerton-Johnson
The Upland Area Green-
ways Association (UAGA)
is working on the following
plans, work days, events,
and information for you to
consider as we strive to im-
prove our ability to enjoy
walking in our community
and riding on trails!
Detamore Trail Head
Upland Area Greenways
– Announcing the Detamore
Trail Head! In the past, the
Upland Area Greenways had
been given a small piece of
land immediately south of
the railroad on Main Street,
just SE of the Main Street
bridge. The Greenways is
in the process of purchasing
the Detamore house imme-
diately southeast of the Main
Street bridge for the purpos-
es of broadening our Trail
Head access. The Detamore
family has graciously agreed
to sell us this property for
$15,000 which we have to
fund in the next 90 days. We
hope to have more informa-
tion about the family in the
weeks to come. Please con-
sider a gift to help us achieve
this $15,000 goal (we’re one
third of the way there now).
Recreational Trails Pro-
gram Grant In Process
Secondly, we are in the
process of applying for a
grant from the Federal Gov-
ernment, administered by
the State of Indiana for the
first one mile stretch of our
Photographs by Georgia Goy
trails system. Should we
be fortunate to receive the
grant, we will be having
several events where we can
work on the trail and your
donation of time can count
towards our required grant
matching funds. Your time
and effort can equal a dona-
tion! The grant would pro-
vide up to $200,000 and we
would have to fund $50,000
through cash gifts or gifts of
labor. The Upland Area Gre-
enways Association wants
the community to take own-
ership of this project by con-
tributing labor or financially.
This project is for you!
Walking Paths in Upland
Currently the Greenways
Program is brainstorm-
ing ways to highlight three
walking paths in Upland.
We plan to identify a one
mile path, a 2 mile path, a 3
mile path and a 4 mile path.
Then you can know just how
far your exercise has taken
you!
Cardinal Greenways
The UAGA continues to
talk with the Cardinal Gre-
enway about ways to help
fill the twelve mile gap be-
tween Gaston and Jones-
boro. If you have ideas
about how to accomplish
this plan, please let us know
by contacting Cindy Wright
at [email protected].
Work Days
The UAGA has partnered
with the Upland Lions Club
in an effort to build a walk-
ing path around the Upland
Lions Club lake for our com-
munity to enjoy. Another
work day is coming soon to
begin clearing a path on the
NE and North side of the
lake. More to come!
THE UAGA has part-
nered with Taylor University
to build a new sidewalk on
Eighth Street. The UAGA
will be looking for volun-
teers to help facilitate laying
the concrete for this side-
walk during the month of
April. If you have an inter-
est in donating your time and
energy, please let us know.
Events
The UAGA will be work-
ing on finding two Saturdays
to host a trail ride in our
community. Look for these
details as the weather turns
warmer! Wandering Wheels’
Bob Davenport will be as-
sisting us with these trips.
We will have a booth at
the Strawberry Festival the
second Saturday in June!
We plan to be at the East-
brook South Elementary
Beginning of School Open
House in August.
Information
If you want to be a mem-
ber of the UAGA, there is no
fee! Simply provide your
name, address, phone num-
ber to Cindy Wright (UAGA
Secretary) at rcwright72@

sure you are receiving our
information. You might re-
