150th Celebration Committee meets to further plans

by Cindy Wright
A second meeting of the 150th Celebration Committee was held on Tuesday , March 14 at the Upland Lions Club .
A committee member , Andrew Preston of Upland Print & Stitch , constructed a large time board for the committee members to organize the events for this year ' s festival , and it was helpful to set out the following tentative plans for the celebration .
The festival will begin on Friday evening , August 25 while the Upland Farmer ' s Market is in full swing . For this event , other vendors will be invited to set up craft booths during the Farmer ’ s Market . That evening there will be some live entertainment .
Saturday , March 26 has been named " Heritage Day ". Several Upland residents have their Centennial costumes ( dresses and menswear ) from previous festivals . Period dress will be a part of this day ’ s events , as well as a return of the " Brothers of the Bush " beard contest . So men , start growing your beards .
Several families have claimed Upland as their home for generations . It was suggested that it would be interesting for families to set up booths with pictures , family heirlooms and stories . People always like to hear and share their stories of family ancestry , tales of being raised in Upland , and events that have made it interesting to live in Upland .
If you would like to set up a craft booth or a family ancestry booth , contact Susan Ancil at 765-998-1270 .
More events are being planned for Friday & Saturday at the Depot Park .
Upland Community Park
Antique Postcard of Upland , Indiana showing Main Street , Half Street , The High School and more .
will be the scene for events taking place on Sunday , August 27 . This day has been entitled " Homecoming ". The Committee for Sunday ’ s events are working on a community church service , live entertainment and family games .
Tentative plans are to have the church service followed by a Community Picnic where families bring their own picnic lunch , just like they used to do almost a century ago , with games for children and adults to participate in . There is the possibility of baseball and basketball games being held , with local residents making up the teams .
The fun evening will end with an outdoor movie , with popcorn and other refreshments .
On the following weekend , the Farmer ' s Market will still take place on Friday evening , September 1 at Depot Park .
On Saturday morning , the annual Town Rummages will take place . Plans are still in the works for the balance of this Saturday . Sunday , September 2 , the Upland Lions Club will serve their Chicken-N-Noodle dinner , followed by the Upland Historical Society ' s ice cream social . The social will be Upland ' s Birthday Party . The annual car show will stay on the calendar for the 26th year at the Lions Club Park , ending the evening with the fireworks display .
Monday , September 3 , will begin with the annual 5K Run , followed up by the Labor Day parade . Start thinking of what you would like to enter in the parade .
This year ' s parade is going to be extra special with lots of entries celebrating Upland ' s 150th birthday . The theme for the festival is : " All Aboard Upland - Celebrating 150 years ".
If you have any ideas or would like to host an event , contact Cindy Wright at 765- 998-2103 .
The entire group of people that attended the meeting were anxious to present a fun and interesting festival .
