Tessa Lark and Peter Kilmo to perform at Arts Place , Portland

Violinist Tessa Lark will perform with pianist Peter Klimo at Arts Place , Portland Center Wednesday , March 22 . The performance will begin at 7:30 with an intermission and complimentary refreshments at 8:15 . The Portland Center is located at 131 E Walnut Street . Winner of the 2012 Naumburg International Violin Competition , Kentucky native Tessa Lark has toured nationally and internationally as a violin soloist . At age 16 , she performed Mozart ’ s Violin Concerto in G major with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and has since then performed other concerti with the Santa Cruz Symphony , Peninsula Symphony , Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra , Santa Fe Symphony , Chinese Opera and Ballet Symphony Orchestra , and New England Conservatory ’ s Symphony Orchestra as a result of winning the school ’ s Violin Concerto Competition in 2010 with the Walton Violin Concerto .
Lark has given many solo recitals , including concerts for the radio broadcasted Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concert series , the Chamber Music Tulsa series , and the Caramoor Wednesday Morning Concert series . As part of the Starling Chamber Orchestra until 2006 , Lark performed as soloist at the Kennedy Center and toured with the orchestra as both concertmaster and soloist in England , Europe , China , and Russia .
A chamber musician , Lark received the Silver Medal at the 2012 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition as part of her piano trio , Modêtre . She has participated in the Music in the Vineyards festival and Caramoor ’ s Rising Star Series , and has attended many summer festivals including Yellow Barn , Steans Institute for Young Artists at the Ravinia Festival , the Perlman Music Program ’ s Chamber Music Workshop , and Music @ Menlo .
Lark has collaborated with renowned artists such as Itzhak Perlman , Miriam Fried , Donald Weilerstein , Pamela Frank , Anthony Marwood , Peter Frankl , Atar Arad , Roger Tapping , Ralph Kirshbaum , Timothy Eddy , and Ronald Thomas and participated in the 2012 Musicians from Ravinia ’ s Steans Music Institute concert tour .
Along with her recent Naumburg award , Lark was also the first prize winner in both the 2008 Irving Klein International Strings Competition and the 2006 Johansen International Competition for Young String Players . Other awards include a top prize in the 2009 Michael Hill International Violin Competition , first prize for the Kentucky division of the Stillman-Kelley Competition , and first prize for NEC ’ s Honors Ensemble Competition as part of the Sonica String Quartet .
Lark started playing violin at age 6 studying with Cathy McGlasson . She joined the Starling Strings Program at University of Cincinnati ’ s College-Conservatory of Music in 2001 and studied with Kurt Sassmannshaus . She entered New England Conservatory in the fall of 2006 to begin studies with Miriam Fried and completed her Master ’ s degree in May 2012 under the tutelage of both Ms . Fried and Lucy Chapman .
Keeping in touch with her Kentucky roots , Lark says she enjoys playing bluegrass music . She has played with Narrow Road , her father ’ s gospel bluegrass band , since she was 8 years old , has attended Mark O ’ Connor ’ s Fiddle Camp in Tennessee for several years and recently performed with the Boston Children ’ s Chorus as a bluegrass fiddler .

Hammonds to perform at Blackford Arts Center

Margaret Hammond and Dan Hammond will be performing at the Blackford County Arts Center on Sunday , March 26 at 2pm . The event is free . Free will donations will be accepted . Dan Hammond grew up in Detroit Michigan . As a teenager , he learned to play the harmonica from his uncle . He taught himself how to play the guitar and banjo . Dan says “ I appreciate musical virtuosity in all
forms from the self-taught blues musicians , jazz improvisors , to the outstanding classical musicians . My music instruction however , is the polar opposite of Margaret ’ s much more formal training .”
Dan received his PhD in chemistry with a specialty in biochemistry from Wayne State University . He taught chemistry and biochemistry at Taylor University for 35 years .
Margaret Hammond was born in Karuizawa , Nagano Ken , Japan to missionaries Ralph and Betty Bell . She started studying piano when she was 4 years old . She has studied with Boris Maximovich ( Kiev Conservatory ) in Detroit and Ron Sloan ( Arizona University ) at Taylor University . Margaret is an accompanist for Taylor University .
She accompanies vocalists and instrumentalists for lessons , hearings , performances , and recitals . She has also performed with the Marion Philharmonic Orchestra , the Jay County Civic Theatre , the Muncie Civic Theatre , the Marion Civic Theatre , and the Jay County High School Theatre . She has accompanied over 30 different musicals . She is currently a teaching artist for Arts Place at the Blackford County Arts Center and the Portland Center .
Margaret and Dan have performed several times together at church , in musicals , at weddings , funerals , and special events .
