The National Squad

This season saw a 'Select' squad play the Royal Marines, and the National Squad play against Malta.

We are hugely grateful for the backing received from SG Hambros, providing a splendid new kit this season, which was proudly worn against Malta. We are also grateful for the huge support from our fans, who again packed the Victoria Stadium on both occasions and created a great atmosphere. They really make it a very special place for the players.

Apart from the results achieved at these games, the National Squad continues to develop. There are currently 29 players in the National Squad, with another 20 players in the Development Squad. The Development squad is largely comprised of either young, promising players or players who will soon meet qualification criteria. Additionally, there are a few experienced players included who provide the cover required at this level should there be injuries in the National Squad, a vital role in amateur sport, as we had nine 'first choice' players either injured or unavailable for the Malta game.

All these players will be involved in a busy summer schedule, designed to enhance Squad cohesion, playing and fitness. As this goes to press, we are busy confirming three fixtures for the coming season, and will issue the final details as soon as possible.

Both groups of players have already started contributing to a 'give back' scheme, and will continue to do so in the future. The idea here is that they are able to assist and contribute to training other teams and squads within the GRFU, as well as other developmental and fund raising activities.

For those aspiring to join these Squads, GRFU 'selectors' will continue to monitor all relevant rugby activities in Gibraltar, as well as maintaining contact with qualified players living away from Gibraltar. More formally, we will continue to hold a 'trial' match just before the Christmas break, which will be an opportunity for players to demonstrate their abilities in a high quality environment.
