Update from Kim Oliver RDO

This summer saw the GRFU run 3 successful Rugby camps.

The first was a 3 day tag rugby camp open to all children age 5-9. We had around 20 children each day, a mix of different ages and abilities, some having never played rugby before.

The camp was designed to give younger

children more confidence with a rugby ball in their hands, we played lots of

fun games as well as taking them through the basic skills needed to play tag

rugby. All the children had lots of fun and loved having a few of the National Team players running around with them.

The second camp was a 2 day Touch Rugby Camp, again this camp was aimed at

all children age 10-16, on this camp we were really happy to see 3/4 girls

coming everyday and really enjoying it and getting stuck in.

We had great numbers again on this camp and being touch rugby boys and girls

can play together.

Not many of the children had played this game of Touch Rugby before so the coaches had to go right back to basics with the laws, however the children picked it up very quickly and we were soon playing competitive games with some fantastic handling and running skills on

display.

The third and final camp was a rugby camp for ages 10-16, this was extremely successful and again we had children that had never played rugby before.

Each day saw a different Nation Team player come down and give the children advice, this was definitely a huge boost for them.

Contact skills were introduced at this camp and the tackle ring was a huge hit. allowing the children to practice their tackling skills on a moving target. We also introduced handling and decision making skills along with fun rugby type games.

By the end of the 3 days the coaches saw huge

improvements from the players and definitely some talent to look out for in the future!
