Spring Job Fair
As a professional fraternity, Alpha Sigma encourages its brothers to gain professional experiences that will further the growth of our brothers. The first semester of pharmacy school can be overwhelming for students adjusting to school demands, student organization involvement, and often a new city. By second semester; however, students have adjusted to life as a professional student and are ready to gain valuable employment experience. To foster employment and professional growth, Brothers Christine Lydon and Katie Breese planned the first Alpha Sigma Job Fair in January. Brothers currently employed in pharmacy hosted tables in an open-fair style event that allowed those seeking employment to approach those already employed by companies or in positions that interested them. Attendees gained valuable insight into the application process, interviewing tips, and frank information on what to expect from various positions. The diverse experiences of our employed brothers included: UIC hospital “externs”, interns at chain pharmacy or other local hospitals, and those with summer experiences in industry. The timing of the Job Fair worked well for students interested in applying to the UIC externships, and those interested in summer applications. At least 20 brothers hosted the tables with an estimated 45 more in attendance. This successful event did provide information to the P1 and P2 classes, and several of the P1s have accepted externships starting this summer. Brother Katie Breese will continue the event next year to encourage the professional development of our brothers as individuals and our fraternity as a whole. Next year, she would like to include information on how to improve CVs, interview skills, and the importance of seeking a professional mentor. Alpha Sigma is sure to see this event grow!
