Celebrating Research
As my pharmacy schooling has gone on, I have been more inclined to put myself out there, and participate in activities that will not only allow me to meet new people, but will also allow me to show case my knowledge on a topic I am very passionate about. The 2016 ASHP Midyear conference was the perfect place for me to do this. If you had asked me when I was a P1 if I ever wanted to present at a national conference on research I had been involved in, I would have said no. However, over time, the UIC College of Pharmacy, especially Phi Delta Chi, has helped me grow to be the person that wants to share their knowledge in the hopes of bettering the pharmacy world. Once I knew I enjoyed presenting, it was only a matter of time before I went to another conference, this time it was the ICHP spring meeting. The other student and myself even won an award for best poster for the category that we registered in!
For the past two years, I have worked as a Student Extern at the Eye and Ear Infirmary (EEI) Pharmacy. I have come across so many amazing aspects of pharmacy I never knew about until I started working there, one of them being immunotherapy for drug allergies. At EEI, a process has been created that allows us to collaborate closely with the allergist and the nurses, to provide patients with treatments that will allow them to take drugs such as antibiotics they were previously allergic too. Again, PDC played a big role in my experience because it was a PDC brother that first suggested the job for me. I am very proud and incredibly honored that I had the opportunity to represent not only PDC, but the UIC College of pharmacy as well.
