ONE NIGHT ONLY ... Chapter Retreat

Alpha sigma hosts general body meetings (GBMs) every Friday to keep brothers updated on what our chapter is currently undertaking. Some of these are mandatory, and ensure that all brothers receive important updates about our chapter or the national brotherhood. During these meetings, the chapter goes through the formal processes and rituals, and this reminds us of the sacred vow we took upon initiation into Phi Delta Chi. It gives brothers a chance to reflect on the bonds that tie us together with other chapters and the missions we represent as a chapter. Meetings that are not mandatory still occur every Friday as a way to include brothers, while also recognizing that some may have other obligations and cannot attend a meeting for PDC every week. These meetings usually cover the previous week’s events, details of the executive board meeting, or other aspects such as financial projections or fundraising. It sends the message that all brothers are valued and are welcome to share their opinions regardless of status in the chapter. It also lets brothers feel confident in the leadership because of the transparency in decision-making. There is a never a time when a general member cannot access information concerning the chapter or get in contact with the executive board with questions or comments. It is this ebb and flow between brothers that allows us to have a successful, inclusive chapter.

At the beginning of this semester the executive board organized a chapter retreat for all of alpha sigma to attend. This was one of the first big events with our newly initiated brothers and provided an excellent venue for everyone to get to know each other a little bit better. As brotherhood is part of the foundation of PDC, spending time with our brothers and getting to know them all is extremely important. While we all have busy schedules, making the time for PDC is always very rewarding. This event provided us all with the chance to reflect on what it means to be a part of PDC while also having some fun at the same time. The first part of the retreat was slightly more serious and was spent discussing ways to improve the chapter from within and learning how we can continue to strengthen our chapter from pledging and volunteer events to social gatherings. The second half of the retreat was more interactive and team building based. Group games were organized to encourage us to get to know different brothers and work on forming new bonds. Overall it was a very successful event that helped us to focus on our goals as a chapter and reminded us all that we are brothers for life!
