Keep the instruments dry
Your musical instrument is your weapon and just like soldiers in the early days had to keep their gunpowder dry , you must keep your instruments dry as well . Musical instruments and accessories should only be stored in a dry place . Otherwise , you will experience rust , wood rot , and cracks . The same goes for cases and accessories - corrosion spares no one . Therefore , for storage , it is necessary to choose a dry place in which temperature changes are impossible ( definitely not near a window or an air conditioning unit ).
Control the humidity
humidity in the room should not exceed 50-60 %. However , too dry indoor air leads to excessive drying of the wood and , as a result , deterioration of the structure of the species . In case of low humidity , it is recommended to use special humidifiers for guitars , which are located inside the cover , case , or inside the guitar itself . There are also automatic humidifiers that analyze the environment and start working in case of low humidity .
Prevent Sudden Temperature Changes Instruments are more resistant to temperature changes than to humidity . The only thing worth remembering is that you should not allow sudden temperature changes ( from + 30 to -40 , for example ), and also avoid longterm storage of the instrument in unfavorable conditions . The comfortable temperature for the instrument varies from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius .
It is forbidden to leave the instrument in a draft or closer than 1.5 metres from heating devices . Sometimes it ’ s hard to keep track of all the conditions , and therefore we additionally recommend using special protection products - wax , oil , polish , and so on .
Keep the instruments clean
Your instrument should be as clean as your playing . No matter how well you monitor humidity and temperature , cleanliness is a decisive factor . It is highly advisable to play the instrument only with clean hands , and after each play , clean the strings with a special product . The same goes for the hardware , which needs to be lubricated periodically , as well as the fingerboard and soundboard . It is recommended to clean the fretboard every time you change strings .
Don ’ t store every instrument horizontally
While some instruments like the keyboard and pieces of the drum kit can be stored horizontally , you must try to avoid storing string instruments horizontally . We recommend that you either purchase a storage case or use special racks or wall holders for guitars . We recommend a wall holder , as the guitar will be 100 % protected from accidental falls ( especially important if you have pets at home ). For longterm storage , we recommend purchasing a thick cover or case . The same goes for accessories such as wires , picks , belts , etc . You can use a regular coat hook or the same wall holder as well .
Store guitar pedals , processors , and drums in special covers and cases , which in turn are stored in a safe place : one fall and your equipment might require repair , and one lamp or set of parts for an amplifier / processor / pedal costs a lot of money .
Some tips for storing accessories :
• Use piggy banks for picks - they will still get lost , but much less often
• Use Velcro Tape to create a more ergonomic space on your pedalboard
• If you have pets at home , it is advisable to store your synthesizer or piano in a special case or not allow your pet into the room with the instrument .
