Always try to keep an open mind . It may be a style you like , but it is useful not to limit yourself to it .
Once you have decided on the genre you want to produce , you should examine the smaller units specific to that genre . For example , if you want to be a deep house producer , understand the kicks used in deep house pieces .
Invest in equipment
Much of this step has been simplified by the introduction of industry-standard monitors in our home studios . The reason it ’ s so important is that studio monitors allow us to hear all the frequencies in the mix .
Producing on laptop speakers or other weak speakers will make it nearly impossible for us to get clean mixes as they don ’ t have low frequency responses . In other words , we can ’ t hear how important elements of our track , such as bass and sub-bass , would sound on a good set of speakers .
Another useful tool for your home studio is the sound card . A sound card basically improves the quality of the sound coming from your computer . The sound coming through the sound card is superior to the sound coming from your computer ’ s internal sound unit .
Headphones with balanced frequency responses that give a realistic sound mix should be preferred . The most accurate frequency response should always be sought .
The last essential tool for a home studio is the MIDI keyboard , which allows you to easily record melodies , chords , bass lines and more into your DAW .
Using a MIDI keyboard will create a smoother production experience . Because that means typing notes on a concrete keyboard instead of clicking on your screen to compose notes .
