HOW TO SET UP YOUR VERY OWN HOME RECORDING STUDIO ?
You already have your audio equipment and you are ready to get down to work . But first you must have a suitable room to record . This will be your home studio . You should carefully choose the room for your home study . If you are in a house with an extra room , you already have it . But if you ’ re in an apartment or somewhere with limited space , your bedroom will inevitably have to double as a recording studio .
Bedrooms ( and really any room in the house ) are not meant to be used as a recording studio . To turn your chosen room into a suitable recording environment , you ’ ll need to do something called acoustic treatment .
How do I treat my room acoustically ?
Your goal when including acoustic treatment in your home studio is to make the space sound as flat as possible . This means removing reverbs with acoustic absorption so that what remains is the direct sound from your instrument or voice .
Follow these steps to remove reverbs from your home studio : Purchase all three types of acoustic treatment :
• Bass traps to absorb low frequencies
• Acoustic panels to absorb medium / high frequencies
• Diffusers to disperse the remaining frequencies
Move around your room and clap on as many spots as you can .
• Look for high-pitched tinkling sounds . These are symptoms of poor acoustics and will create problems in your mixes . If you ’ re in the typical room with four corners and a medium-height ceiling , the acoustics are likely to be poor .
Use acoustic treatment to solve the following problems :
• Corners . Put bass traps in the corners of your room . These are the most important element of the acoustic treatment , and the corners are especially problematic for bass reverberation . Placing bass traps in the corners eliminates reflections and mutes excess bass that could creep into your mix .
• Windows . Put acoustic panels on the windows to cover them . Glass reflects very bright frequencies that can cause problems in your mix .
Repeat the clapping test
Keep doing it as you progress through the acoustic treatment until you achieve the desired sound . It ’ s usually a nice , smooth reverb .
Use diffusers
These are used to disperse and control sound reflections if you prefer to have a little more reverb . You can combine the strategic placement of diffusers with the acoustic treatment material to obtain the exact atmosphere you like in the room .
