The structure of a song has evolved as time progressed . Initially , it was one Pallavi with multiple charanams of same tune with interludes in between . Later , the Pallavi was standard and the charanams reduced to 3 . But with pop and independent songs now , the Pallavi is followed by maximum two charanams . However , the interludes for each of these songs are unique in their own way but the connectivity from Pallavi to each charanam is quite a challenge in itself . Interludes are like a bridge between the Pallavi to charanam . Interludes set the mood of the song with various permutations of musical instruments that suit the theme of the song . The biggest challenge for the composer is not composing the tune but creating interludes that are different yet connected to the core theme of the song . While music experts feel that interludes are just feelers to the main song , it is not completely true . Interludes bring the additional feel to the core element of the song and add the beauty required for pleasant listening . |
Without interludes , the song loses the continuity and becomes a plain listen . Each interlude has to touch a different dimension of the song and its emotions . Lyrics , emotion , melody and the situation of the song are all the factors that are dependent on this . A talented composer keeps all these in mind and make sure that the interludes do not sound repetitive but bring a different dimension to the song ’ s core theme .
We cannot imagine a song without an interlude because it completes the song in a perfect sense . Interludes add the required life to the composition . With the exception of Shankar Mahadevan ’ s Breathless , it is highly difficult to do justice to a song without an interlude .
Interludes are like add-ons to the song because a song tells a story by itself . A song has a story and along with the melody and lyrics , interludes give a wonderful embellishment to the composition . Interludes can either add grandeur to a song and make it quintessentially regal and add the missing piece in the jigsaw puzzle .
