How important is formal training or attending workshops like Avid Learning’ s in shaping a writer’ s voice
Even if you haven’ t done a formal writing program, listening to other writers discuss their work in a workshop scenario or in a lecture is immensely helpful and often more useful than plain theory. At the same time, a certain amount of theory gives you some grounding and a language to be able to understand the craft; but I think that it does not need to pervade your entire learning curve. A little bit at the beginning, a little bit of a refresher along the way is fine.
FROM AVID
How has Avid Learning evolved from its inception to becoming one of India’ s leading cultural platforms?
?
Avid Learning began its journey in 2009 as Essar Group’ s cultural philanthropy arm, envisioned by Mrs. Madhu Ruia, our Founder & Chairperson.
From its earliest days, we were committed to creating inclusive, educational, and experiential cultural programming. Over 15 + years, we have evolved into one of India’ s most prolific arts and culture programming platforms, having presented over 1800 multiverse and hybrid programs both within the country and internationally. Our evolution has been shaped by our belief in the power of interdisciplinary learning and the importance of collaboration. We have consistently brought together the best of Indian and international writers, artists, intellectuals, cultural experts, policymakers, and industry leaders across a broad spectrum of Visual Arts, Literature, Culture and Heritage, Design & Technology, Education, and the Performing Arts.
In 2020, in response to the rapidly shifting circumstances, we launched AVID Online, expanding our reach to a global audience. This digital platform allowed us to engage over 2 million learners worldwide, making our content accessible, inclusive, and relevant even in times of global disruption. Under the dynamic curatorial direction of Avid Learning’ s CEO, Asad Lalljee, we also took on the curatorial leadership at the historic Royal Opera House, Mumbai, India’ s only surviving opera house, since its reopening in 2016. With forays into global markets like Dubai and New York and an ever-growing base of creative collaborators, Avid Learning’ s growth reinforces its motto that # LearningNeverStops.
What role does Avid Learning play in bridging the gap between education and the arts?
Avid Learning has long championed the belief that the arts are essential to holistic education and personal development. One of our most impactful curations has been through skill-building workshops and masterclasses that empower learners of all ages with both foundational and advanced knowledge across a wide spectrum of creative disciplines. From exploring sustainable living and environmentally conscious design to unpacking the art of storytelling for screen and stage, our workshops are curated to offer both relevance and depth.
We also prioritize arts education through policy steering symposiums and conferences convened in collaboration with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry( FICCI) and alignment with the Ministry of Culture’ s( GoI) focus areas.
