THE SACRED GAMES ERA
How did your involvement with Sacred Games come about, and what was that collaborative writing process like?
???
What do you think made the show resonate so powerfully with Indian and global audiences?
Any behind-thescenes writing moments you can share from your time working on it?
I had been collaborating with Vikram Motwane for many years before Sacred Games. We worked Deepa Mehta‘ s Water, I acted in a short film he directed, and he was my DOP on a short film that I directed( calles Shanu Taxi, you can watch it on Vimeo or YouTube). When Vik had the opportunity to do Sacred Games, he thought of me because of previous work of mine that he had read, feeling that I had range as a writer, and I could handle the murky world of Vikram Chandra ' s Sacred Games.
I think it is the fact that the source material was so strong and profound, and that everybody involved in making sacred games down to the last technician was really putting their best foot forward; because it would open India’ s innings with OTT and everybody had a very strong sense of purpose in bringing this about in the best possible way. In short, everybody brought the best of themselves forward and put it into the project. We have the talent in India, and we were empowered to use it during Sacred Games A lot of that has changed now!
There are so many good memories of laughter and exhaustion! One thing that comes to mind is that as we approached production, we were still polishing the episodes and I would come into the Phantom office to see headshots of actors, props laid out( guns, and so on), galleries of action vehicles etc. I saw the thing grow from scratch- from the blank page into something real, and that was pretty amazing!
