INTERFACE JUNGLE
Most interfaces offer additional expansion of 8 channels or
more via ADAT, which is a digital signal used to carry 8
signals at once at 48kHz. So if you see only 2 or 4 Pre amps on
the back panel but the specifications mention more possible
IO, look for an ADAT input. That means you can purchase an
ADDA (Analogue to Digital/Digital to Analogue) 8 Channel
Pre amp strip and connect that to your interface using ADAT
and increase the number of simultaneous inputs.

Then we must consider the outputs. Extra outputs allow
you to use external effect processors or effect pedals. Along
with that they are vital if one needs to send multiple monitor
mixes when recording more than one artist simultaneously.
Lastly we have special features unique to each Audio
Interface. Built in MIDI IO is always a great option as you can
use that instead of occupying the precious remaining USB
ports on your machine. Some Interfaces also offer multiple
monitor outputs if you like switching between different sets
of speakers. Some high end Interfaces offer great software
plugins and effects that can be used while recording (for
eg UAD offers pristine software emulations of legendary
equipment)

There are some websites that help you narrow down your
choices by applying filters specific to Audio Interface options
and features like sweetwater dot com and b&h dot com. the need of more simultaneous IO, it is always recommended
you start with an Audio Interface that offers that right from
the get go.
An Audio Interface is the heart of any studio and should
always be considered as a long term investment. You may
need only 2 or 4 Pre Amps at present, but if you can foresee -Mukul Jain (Chief Engineer, Ferris Wheel Studios)
