With the decentralisation of culture , where people base their entire personalities upon the types of books they read , the music they listen to , or even the social media that surrounds them , a different musical wave comes up each day from the depths of SoundCloud where music artists and people who share their likings get hooked on to a specific taste of music , not entirely similar to what is already available by the big publications over the years .
These newly popping microgenres are like the entrails of the commonly known genres and sub-genres such as Rock , Metal , Hip-Hop , Dubstep , etc . Only the ones who know how to find such music are probably part of these ‘ circles ’ where people create and enjoy such music . Some are restricted to a few artists and a few thousand fans but can be deemed a micro-genre . The act of discovering or inventing something new and labelling yourself the king of the genre is the infatuation that drives these artists . The people who have shared similar life experiences or have remarkably similar interests are drawn towards these thematic micro-genres .
For example , the early 2010s saw the rise of dubstep and techno as people started to adapt to electronic beats and bass-driven music . This led to the creation some micro-genres like the Future Bass , Future House ,
Tropical House , and many others . Extracting their roots from a typically known genre , these are deemed more specific ‘ sounds ’ and can be singled out specifically by those with a vivid yet specific musical taste . The community connects , and a sense of recognition and solidarity prevails .
Some of these micro-genres have also developed into a bigger scene since they originated .
Lo-Fi Hip-Hop Recently gaining enough traction to be classified as a genre on its own , Lo-Fi Hip-Hop originated in the 2010s as a mix of hip-hop and chill-out music . This microgenre offers a different vibe to its listeners ; the music is used in day-long playlists , YouTube video compilations , tracks for meditation , and so on .
Tropical House Music created for people to relive a beach party-like vibe , featuring synthesised instrumentation . The term was coined by an Australian producer , Thomas Jack , as a joke , and the genre picked up its presence specifically in outdoor parties and music festivals .
Mumble Rap Evolving from the roots of its elder cousin , Rap , Mumble Rap was introduced in the 2010s and didn ’ t focus on creating lyrically deep meanings as Rap focuses on . The basic focus here is the basic art of mumbling lyrics to create more of a ‘ flow ’ rather than meaning .
Psychedelic This , or Psychedelic Trance , focuses on the style derived from 1960s psychedelia , where consumption of drugs such as LSD was on a high . Using exotic instruments such as the Sitar and creating visual imagery that directly complements the drug intake is what Psychedelic offers .
Vaporwave This micro-genre involves heavy usage of electronic beats and mainly focuses on the heavy imagery that music can create by chopping , slowing down , adding reverberations , and heavy bass , basically heavily synthesised and processed music . Future Funk and Hardvapour are further additions to this micro-genre as it grew over time .
Indie Rock Rock music that was created by low-budget labels and artists who planned to release their music by themselves is called Indie Rock . Originating in the US and the UK in the 1980s , the word is derived from ‘ independent ’ because of the nature of the artists and bands at the time of releasing their work into the market . The genre focuses entirely on its distribution channel and system rather than being a different-sounding genre .
