my singing assignments came to a standstill I set up a home studio . I have learnt to play the piano already so I bought a basic Microphone and other equipments needed to record a good quality audio . Once I started posting my videos I received responses from U . S . A and Canada . Some well wishers were willing to support me in producing the songs . I didnt imagine I would someday produce professional music videos , right from recording to video-editing and publishing , using my home studio set up . Technology if used in the right way can do wonders and has been a truly democratizing force for artistes across the world .
Your renditions on Instagram display a blend of tradition and innovation . How do you balance staying true to classical Carnatic roots while experimenting with contemporary musical elements ?
I have been exposed to global
music from a young age . But I have always loved learning , following and performing carnatic music and I am continuing to learn . Staying true to the roots is important as innovation needs strong foundation . It is very easy to get lost while trying out different ideas in music . It is the strong Carnatic / classical base that helps you find your way back and create meaningful music that people can connect with
As a Carnatic singer with a strong digital presence , how do you perceive the impact of social media on the propagation of classical music , especially among younger audiences ?
Social media is very effective in connecting with the younger generation who take to Instagram a lot . One doesn ’ t need to go to a sabha to watch or intereact with musician . Also it is an effective platform to connect personally with everyone , example Shri . Sanjay Subramaniam recently did a shorts series where he spoke about one raga and his connection with that raga . Having said this , I feel social media cannot replace the traditional culture of listening to an artist live in person . It can enhance the overall connect between the artist and the audience
In the realm of Carnatic music , what projects or initiatives are you currently working on , and what can your audience look forward to in the coming months ?
I have a few concerts this Margazhi starting Nov 27th ending with a concert in the prestigious Madras Music academy on December 19th . I am also working on a Thiruvempavai series this year . Last year I released a Tiruppavai series on Social media and the response was overwhelming . Hoping this series also reaches music lovers and they enjoy the bhakti rasa in it . I am also working on 2 independent songs coming up in Jan 2024 .
