SOUVIK CHAKRABORT Y Where do I start with music? For all the audiophiles out there, creating music on your own might have been the biggest dream of your life. However, the path to a glorifying future is replete with small hurdles along the way. But, remember the greats had also started by doing little things first. Have a look at the stellar oeuvre of any composers, musicians or singers of our time and you can trace back their musical journey on some very interesting projects. Those who are relatively new in the industry or are still contemplating whether or not to take the big leap, should perhaps consider the world of advertisement jingles as their launchpad, largely for its high conversion rates. The very celebrated singer Kumar Ganjawala known for his melodious contribution to the Bollywood soundscape had actually been through the amazing success of his ad jingle for Amul. The much famous 'Doodh Hai Wonderful' campaign my Amul was rendered eternal by the talented singer before he became a much acclaimed Bollywood singer for songs like 'Bheeghe Honth' and 'Humdum Soniyo Re'. It is interesting that a singer like Kailash Kher had actually lent his voice for the Nakshatra Jingle before being the soulful master of Bollywood songs. 28 The Score Magazine highonscore.com A good singer is often inspired by his surroundings and the company he keeps. A classic example of such phenomena would obviously be Clinton Cajero. Not only did he take up singing for the faith his friends had put on him, but also he had sung one of the catchiest ad jingle of recent times: 'Haan Haan Main Crazy Hoon'. Contextually, Shaan had also been a successful ad jingle singer before becoming the singer of romantic chartbusters. Not to forget, Sonu Nigam and KK both have worked in the ad industry to keep it rolling while the films were few and far in between. In fact, KK is believed to have sung about 3000 jingles un 11 languages before becoming one of the most sought after singer of Bollywood after four years. Sona Mohapatra is another name who should get a special mention on this list because of her superhit jingle for CloseUp: 'Pas Aao Na'. She was also someone who had started her career largely from advertisement jingles. Shilpa Rao, who is known for her unique textured voice had also been one of the prolific singers in the Bollywood who had been credited with a host of ad jingles before her playback singing career. Not only singers but composers and music directors of our times had given stellar hits in their ad jingle careers as well. Amit Trivedi, for example, has sort of gifted us the most poignant and touchy yet fun jingle of our times: the IDEA Honey Boney Jingle. For some composers like Shankar Mahadevan, an ad jingle actually gave a recognition as a singer. The 'Kuchh Khaas Hai Hum Sabhi Mein' the chocolate ad actually gave Shankar the validation as a singer after he got a platform to do playback. It is perhaps the sparks of brilliance in these kinds of jingles that had actually transpired into his celebrated jukebox in the later part of their career. Take Suraj Jagan for example, a man largely known for his super-famous jingle: 'You and I in this beautiful world'. Before coming to Bollywood with songs like 'Give Me Some Sunshine' it was the ad jingles that shot him to fame. Even the legendary singers like Chitra Singh and Jagjit Singh had sung for ad jingles and made it big over time. Now for the shocker, did you know that AR Rahman had actually composed over 300 ad jingles in his career. From Garden Sarees to Leo Coffee and MRF Tyres, Rahman has catered to a large client base.
