ADITI SARAWAGI NEW AGE CONCERT VENUES IN INDIA The thrill and excitement of live music cannot be matched with any other experience. Culminating the two-part series, here are the new age concert venues like no other in the country! Hard Rock Café With a chain of cafes across the world, Hard Rock Café is associated with not only its mouth-watering burgers but its outstanding live acts. Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Bangalore or Kolkata, they showcase indie, upcoming, popular and even international artists and their standards are hard to match as they maintain consistency through all its cafes. Storyteller’s Bar, Pondicherry Relatively new to the live music scene, the Storyteller’s Bar in Pondicherry has become a cult space for live performances. Not only do they host live musicians, but also spoken word artists and poets. It is no surprise that it has been co-founded by former Blue Frog head-Simran Mulchandani. It promises to be a comprehensive venue for all forms of performance art. Raasta, Delhi & Mumbai Raasta, both in Delhi and in Mumbai, is a funky venue space, with a Caribbean aesthetic which pays homage to music greats like Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan. It has both an indoor as well as a rooftop space which makes it a preferable choice for a number of DJ’s and rappers too. Bonobo, Mumbai Bonobo has taken pride position in the Mumbai live music circuit and has a strict screening system for all its performances allowing only the best to perform on its stage. A number of underground cultural institutions like KRUNK treat Bonobo as their first choice when selecting a venue for an event. Social Offline, Mumbai/ Bangalore/ Delhi/ Chandigarh Following close on the heels of the popularity of Hard Rock Café, Social Offline has made its presence felt in plenty on Indian cities and is the perfect combination of a café, bar, restaurant and live music venue. It also had an underground music branch – Anti Social which was hugely popular though now it no longer exists. It is the go-to place for the young crowd to discover new indie music. The Humming Tree, Bangalore The Humming Tree has become nothing short of a cultural boon for the Bangalore live music scene. It was built with the aim of promoting upcoming musicians and to give them a platform. It has launched a local collective called the ‘Consolidate’ and has also brought in international artists like Anderson Paak and Wolf Alice. Someplace Else, Kolkata When it comes to live music, Someplace Else in Kolkata occupies a special place in the heart of the city’s music lovers and is nothing short of a heritage pub being in the business for more than twenty-five years. It has showcased independent musicians who have become hugely popular like Amyt Dutta, Anjan Dutta, Indian Ocean, Parikrama and Gary Lawyer. Kitty Su, New Delhi Though Kitty Su is a luxurious nightclub well known for its high- profile events and is primarily known for its DJ’s and dance parties, it has an amazing live music scene as well. It has hosted international artists like Zedd and DJ Steve Aoki and many other EDM stalwarts. The Piano Man Jazz Club, New Delhi Right from its inception in 2015, it is almost single-handedly reviving a dying jazz community and is promoting live music like no other place with a gig almost every single night. It is a haven for music lovers and in a short span of time has won the hearts of music lovers in the city. It heavily promotes independent musicians and its main focus is music along with scrumptious food and wine of course. Music is food for the soul and live music is an emotion be it at iconic venues or at new age venues, the winners are music and its lovers. The Score Magazine highonscore.com 25
