KUSUMITHA VASANTH
We have come a long way since the days of analogue recording . With the advancement of technologies like Artificial Intelligence , it is no surprise that the effects of it spilt over to the music industry as well , especially music production . AI has given new tools and techniques to create , edit and enhance music in a way that was previously thought impossible .
So , how is AI being used in music production ?
• Through the creation of virtual instruments and sample libraries . You can see this in software like Garage Band , Logic Pro X and all the other popular music production software . This creation has nullified the need of having to deal with the limitations of live instruments and instrumentalists . You need not invest thousands of rupees on instruments to get the sound you need as well . They are said to be as realistic and dynamic as regular instruments .
• Using a machine learning algorithm to analyse and manipulate audio data . In simpler words , AI understands the existing patterns of the music you create and later , using the same information , it generates new melodies and harmonies you can potentially use in your song .
• Automated mixing and mastering naturally adjust the levels of equalisation or EQ of the piece you create . It helps in creating a more balanced and polished sound . You can easily spot the differences between music made in the 90s and the music made now . The quality of the sound is so much greater . All thanks to Artificial Intelligence .
• AI can make a song all by itself . If you just type in the tempo and mood you want the song to be in , the technology can create music . Right from generating melodies and lyrics to the rhythm . AI will do your job for you .
• It can analyse your music and tell you how good / bad it is based on current trends and the usual data on what kind of music is generally considered ‘ good .’
Music production in today ’ s day and age has seen a major transformation due to AI , to say the least . It has made the process less intimidating and extremely beneficial for beginners to pick up on skills slowly . AI has helped increase accuracy in the music being produced and saves time and money . New sounds and textures are being synthesised as you ’ re reading this . However , multiple debates are going on about the negative impact it actually has on the industry . They are about the loss of originality and the proposed threat to human musicians . How we make use of this technology and to what extent is of course , up to us .
