The Scoop WINTER 2018-2019 | Page 74

Reading has always been

a big part of my life, but it hasn’t

always been that way.

Back in elementary school when I was in second grade, I was

convinced that it was impossible to finish a thick chapter book.

Beginning in middle school, I started to read and finish books

out of curiosity, wonder, and adventure. They steered me into

a world of fantasy that was far from reality and led me to become

the dreamer I am today.

My top two children’s books combine two of the things I love

the most: trees and books.

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

I remember vaguely back in elementary school when my teacher read

The Giving Tree to me. It didn’t mean much to me at the time. As I

grew older, however, the story stayed in my heart, and I started to

appreciate what I have rather than mope over what I don’t have.

The Lorax was actually read to me in middle school during a school

camping trip. During one of the hikes, my camp group sat down on

a log and read The Lorax. Keep in mind that I was already a bibliophile,

but I found out how magical it is to read a book completely immersed in

nature (especially when listening to someone read The Lorax).
