The Darkness

- JUDITH ZHANG-

We all grew up watching Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Disney XD, right? Nowadays, Disney is one of the most famous channel watched by kids and teenagers. Out of all of the movies and TV shows they ever portray, one of my favorites was Cinderella. Cinderella is an American Musical Film created by Charles Perrault and was released on February 15, 1950. There is no such as the date of when Cinderella was created or what was the first version because there are so many of them. The most famous version of it is the one that we all know. For those who have never watched Cinderella and what it is about, here’s a little refresher: Cinderella moves to live with her stepmother, Lady Tremaine and her two stepsisters, Anastasia and Drizella. She is badly treated by her stepmothers and sisters, but she isn’t alone because she is friends with her animal friends. She is like the maid of the house;

she cleans the house, sews, and cooks. One day, a messenger delivers a letter from the castle to attend a ball in the palace because the king was looking for a bride for the prince and everybody is invited including Cinderella. Lady Tremaine gets Cinderella to do extra chores and to clean up after Lucifer (Stepmom’s Cat) because she doesn’t want Cinderella to go to the ball. While Cinderella does her chores, the mice and birds help to make the dress beautiful.

However, her stepsisters destroy her dress, and she’s left crying in the garden. Just then, her fairy godmother appears, turns a pumpkin into an elegant coach, and changes her dress into a beautiful gown with a perfect pair of crystal shoes. The only condition is that she had to return before midnight, because the magic would wear off. Everyone looked at her due to her beauty, and the king couldn't take his eyes off of her. They dance, and this was a dream come true, but it struck midnight, and she left running, and she left her one pair of shoes, and the prince sent Grand Duke to find this girl. The shoe that the Grand Duke was carrying was broken, but Cinderella had a new one, and when she tried it, it fit. Afterward, the Prince and Cinderella got married and lived happily ever after.

This is the version we all grew up with, and we love, but sadly, there is a truth behind this movie. Since there are different versions of this story, we will take a look at the most famous ones.

THE BROTHERS GRIMM (German Version)

Cinderella is the daughter of a wealthy merchant and her mother dies and her father remarries, and her stepsisters aren’t ugly but have horrible personalities. The stepsister don’t call her Cinderella, but they call her Aschenputtel, which means “ash fool.” In this version, there is no appearance of the fairy godmother, but there is a magical hazel tree that has grown with Cinderella’s tears near her mother’s tomb.

When she wishes for something near the tree, the bird appeared and gave her a dress of silver and gold with golden slippers instead of the blue heels. The king finds her shoes, and the stepsisters had to cut their toes for the shoes to make it fit, but they are caught and stop when the birds show up. The birds sing “ Turn and peep, turn and peep, there’s blood within the shoes, and the shoes it is so smaller for her, the true bride waits for you.”

Another version aside from this one is called:

Fair, Brown, and Trembling (Irish Version) by Jude Daly

Once upon a time, there was a king named Aedh Curucha who had three daughters: Fair, Brown and Trembling, Trembling is the most powerful and the other sisters hate her for that. The son of the king of Ammonia and he is betrothed to Fair (one of the sister). Trembling is sad because she doesn’t have a dress to church, so the lady that takes care of the royal chicken granted her a magic dress and the King fell in love with her. Trembling lost her shoes riding from the church, and that’s how the Prince found her. Fair was so jealous that she pushed Trembling into the sea and a whale swallowed her. Fair tries to imitate her sister by dressing like her, but the prince knew she wasn’t Trembling. In the end, Fair is left alone in a barrel alone running through the sea.
