This year, Father’s Day is celebrated on June 18th. It is a celebration to honor fathers and fatherhood in societies. Countries and religion celebrate Father’s Day differently. Catholic Europe and Latin America celebrate it differently on a different day; it falls on March 19th. Other countries such as Europe and the United States have adopted to the U.S. date. It is celebrated by over 40 countries in the world, each country celebrates their fathers on a different day.

The U.S. date is often celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Countless people tried to establish Father's Day. In 1911, a person that goes by the name “Jane Addams” proposed a citywide celebration to be held in Chicago, but she was turned down. A year later there was a celebration in Vancouver, Washington suggested by a pastor named J.J. Berringer of the Irvington Methodist Church. On June 19, 1910, a Father’s Day celebration was held at the YMCA in Spokane, Washington by Sonora Smart Dodd. Sonora’s father was a civil war veteran “William Jackson Smart” was a single parent that raised six children. She was also a member of Old Centenary Presbyterian Church when she proposed the idea. In 1909, Jarvis proposed the idea about Mother’s Day at Central Methodist Episcopal Church. After hearing Jarvis’s idea, Sonora came up with the idea of Father's Day. Churches celebrate the day differently because of the religion. Some of the churches have celebrated Father’s Day ever since the day it was created. Others observe the day as they learn about it.

Father’s Day was not celebrated in the U.S. until the 20th century. It was made official to complement Mother’s Day by celebrating fatherhood and male parenting. In December 1907, there was a mining disaster that killed about 361 men and roughly 250 fathers were dead. Clayton told the pastor to honor those fathers but due to a number of other events that were taking place, he wasn’t able to promote the event.
