The Scoop SUMMER 2017 | Page 29

Sound familiar? If it doesn’t, let’s go back to our childhood memories and remember those classic Disney Channel movies. If you guess "The Little Mermaid" then you are right, and for those who have never watched it before, "The Little Mermaid" tells the story of a beautiful mermaid princess who is fascinated with life on land, a dream that is forbidden by her controlling father, King Triton. On one of her visits to the surface, she falls for a human prince. Ever since then, she dreams of becoming a human. This lovely animated story was written by Hans Christian Andersen, back in 1837 and ever since then, there have been a number of adaptations with the most popular being Disney’s.

Innocence is a poison. Love kills. And fairy tales, are actually filled with sweet little lies. YouthLINE is back again to tell you the "true” story behind this lovely tale. So in both of the sugar coated and true versions, the story starts off with the same thing. Ariel finally turned fifteen years old and was allowed to go to the surface and explore. The Little Mermaid was the youngest of all these sisters, she was a pale, beautiful, and curious girl who felt a deep attraction for all things new and strange. Once she had permission to visit the surface, left home and took the head off water for the first time.

Ariel saw the prince from afar in his ship and later had to rescue him from drowning, The two end up falling in love with each other. From that day forward, Ariel thought that Prince Eric was the love of her life. Her father found out that she had been going to the dangerous surface and that she had fallen in love with a human. He prohibited her from visiting the surface ever again. Of course, this made Ariel really angry, she spent days thinking of a way to escape but she couldn’t. Until one day when she decided to visit the sea witch一Ursula一 who took Ariel's tongue in exchange for human legs; since she had an amazing voice.

The deal is the same in the true story; Ariel can only remain a human if she finds true love’s kiss and the prince falls in love with and marries her. But if she fails, she will DIE; also every single step she takes will feel like she is walking on sharp glass. The last catch of the deal was that she could never return to the sea. As soon as Ariel got her legs, she swam to the surface looking for Eric. Little did she know, Eric was getting ready for his wedding. Eric waited for Ariel every day at the coast for many years. But she never showed up since her father prohibited her from going there, Eric got tired of waiting and decided to move on with his life.

This news killed her, she left the castle running to the coast calling Ursula; begging her to give her tail back. Ursula said, “a deal is a deal, there’s no way to undo it.” But then Ariel found out that if she KILLS the prince, she can simply turn back into a mermaid and doesn’t have to die. Ariel wasn’t capable of doing this. Eric was the love of her life, she just couldn’t do it. So instead she decided to throw herself into the sea, therefore turning into sea foam.

You love with your brain, but love is irrational; which is why sometimes love makes us do stupid things like this. But sometimes we have to accept that not everything is possible in the world. Remember that love is free, but all magic comes with a price.
