The Scoop SUMMER 2017 | Page 59

Today, more and more people continue to flee their home countries and abandon their old lives for reasons such as war and poverty. The uneasiness in their country and constant state of fear force families to move away and seek refuge in strange and new places. These people risk a lot coming to a brand-new country just to feel safe. However, opening the gates of a country opens up the possibility of terror groups immigrating with refugees. Accepting refugees have the chance of giving people hope of a new start, but not without problems.

With ISIS in the Middle East and the Syrian Civil War, many Middle Easterners have been immigrating to European nations to flee these terrible conflicts. Although we understand why these people want to go to Europe, this does not stop the terror groups from slipping in. Having thousands of people flooding into a country at once is an easy way for terrorists to come into a country. For example, France has let in 30,000 refugees in just the last two years; and within those two years, the number of terror attacks increased. One of the terrorists was found with a fake passport. Even though immigration is controversial, it is no excuse to use to make immigrants out to be bad people. We, as a human race, should at least sympathize with their struggles and understand the courage it takes to start a new life in a foreign country.

Moving to a brand new country comes with so many risks. Having almost nothing but family and hope is hard to live off of. These people who risk their lives just to feel safe in a Western country only want to want a good place and life for themselves and their family. Not all refugees are taken in, however, and some float around in life rafts for months. We have to understand that refugees are among the first people who are attacked by terror attacks or war. June 20th is World Refugee Day. Just because there is only one day in the year named specifically for refugees, that does not mean we should not honor their bravery all the time. They should be recognized for their determination and strength for risking it all for safety.

no war, no blood, just us.
