In 1647, when Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans took England, they terminated the celebration of Christmas and singing carols. However, the carols survived when people started singing them in secret. Carols remained mainly unsung until Victorian times when William Sandys and Davis Gilbert collected lots of old Christmas music from English villages and published them as a collection. Thanks to them, Christmas caroling was revived. Ever since then, people began singing them in streets, churches, and everywhere. This seasonal tradition has been passed on from home to home.
This custom remained popular even when hip-pop christmas songs were trending.
These Christmas songs were once quiet, but they are now heard across the whole world. Since then, the joyous music filled England once again, and moreover, it spread throughout Europe.
No matter what type of music you choose to enjoy for the rest of year, the tradition of Christmas carols breaks through the barriers to become the must be/must do of the Christmas season.
