Global warming isn’t a topic often touched on in media sources. You don’t ever see it on big 24-hour news networks and convenient sources like newspaper. The least you would have to do is personal research to see the effects of global warming. Even the rare occasions that global warming appears on media, it is often within something boring and not attention-catching. It would probably be some old person or someone with a reaaaally boring voice that would make you want to change the channel. Global warming is real, and it has much more of an effect than most people think. It’s not like an increase of 1 degree Fahrenheit, it is much more.

Ninety-seven percent of the scientific community agree that global warming is anthropogenic. The main source that is causing global warming is the burning of fossil fuels, car and machine gasoline if you will. We pretty much depend on gasoline to go about our day. All those cars with their honks and people with their road-rage depend on gasoline to have their daily dose. Anyways, the use of gasoline releases carbon in the air. And as most people know, carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas. But what exactly does this mean? Simply said, carbon gets stuck in the air we breathe and when the sun shines its light onto us plebeians, the heat stays inside the Earth. Back to the example of a car, sunlight shines through the windows and the inside of the car gets extremely hot and stuffy. I’m sure everyone has experienced this one or twice. This is the greenhouse effect, but with Earth being the car instead. But don’t misunderstand, the greenhouse effect is actually good! If we didn’t have the greenhouse effect, the Earth would be an eternal ice cube with really low temperatures. However, too much of anything is bad, including heat obviously. The heating of the globe melts ice at the North and South poles, but how does all this affect us?

The planet is getting hotter, it’s only a little hotter, “we’ll get used to it”, who cares? In San Francisco, we have noticed some effect of global warming. I mean, California had this huge, crazy drought where people were panicking. Temperature has gotten a bit hotter, but that’s all there is… right? Nope, not at all. So, the drought had a much greater impact than regular civilians thought. California has the 7th biggest economy in the world, and some part of its economy comes from agriculture. Our whole central valley is used for agriculture, and this drought lowered our produce. In essence, people had gotten less food on their table, some people got hungry and we lost income. Much of the U.S. depend on the agricultural production, and with global warming, this isn’t getting any easier. If everything crashes, with the droughts and wildfires (yes, wildfires can happen) due to global warming, famine can start popping up. Not only that, but because of global warming, we have lost our native fishes. Salmons are the most awesome and best fish of the sea (in some people’s opinion) and because of global warming, they are no longer with us. Most of the fish in Californian water are coldwater, so increase in temperature leads to a loss in fish. But, this is also happening worldwide. As temperature increases, animals on both land and in water lose their habitats (not like humans are already doing that), but we’re slowly heading towards mass extinction. This isn’t an impossibility, considering the state of the world and how most politicians aren’t doing much. If Bernie Sanders gets elected, maybe we can finally do something as a country and not just as individual people.
