Today I bought a day full for $ 36.83 .
I was at the QT convenience store for my morning ritual . I watched a lady unload a baby and a toddler at the gas pumps . The car was barely legal . She was likely the grandma watching kids while a young mother worked .
I was near the counter inside when she walked up to the attendant . She passed him three ones and four quarters and said "$ 4.00 on pump 3 ." You and I both know the story this tells , and how far she will get on a gallon and a half of gas . She left and I saw several in the crowd including 2 sheriff ' s deputies watch her leave . It is painful to see people struggling .
It was my turn and I quietly said , handing the young attendant a credit card , " Tell her she won a tank of gas ." Well , that young and often inattentive clerk lit up like a Christmas tree ! He was obviously a theatre major in high school and college and his inner actor sprung to life as he got on the microphone at the poor unsuspecting lady ' s gas pump and put on a show . It started with a mouth produced trumpet fanfare and applause and he broadcasted the prize ! She jumped in fright and then joy set in as he tagged on " and then come in and get your $ 4 back ."
I started it quietly but now it was a thing . Nobody left the store as we all watched the excitement and tears . She came back in smiling and the clerk passed her $ 4 . For a minute I feared she was going to buy a pack of smokes ( not sure why I thought that ) but when the clerk asked her what she ' d like to spend it on she gave the perfect reply . " My babies are getting ice cream for lunch !"
As I left I heard two other people , one of them a sheriff say , " I wanna do that !" I saw them scanning the pumps for potential opportunities .
