BART JACQ | DESIGNER | OCTOPUS GROUP, MARKETING SERVICES When he’s not busy championing the virtue of good design, Bart’s cheering on his Portuguese side to victory – Oh. Wait. (sorry Bart – Ed.) Make time for us on thesauce@ weareoctopusgroup.net EXPLAIN YOUR JOB ROLE IN 50 WORDS OR LESS... My role consists in conceptualising and developing visual ideas, translating them into pieces of graphic communication. I do that by manipulating words and images, whilst taking in consideration factors such as the channel my work will be distributed into, the audience I am designing for, production costs, whom will sign the work off, and a few other things. WHAT’S YOUR BEST CAREER ADVICE? Love what you do or do something else? Constantly remember that life is extremely short. WHAT’S YOUR PROUDEST GROUP MOMENT TO DATE? One day I was having dinner with a group of friends and some of their friends. At one moment I was talking to this lady and we were discussing tech, when I mentioned that I worked for this company called Octopus Group. Her eyes popped-out in surprise and said, “oh really, you work for Octopus!?”. I shouldn’t have been so surprised, perhaps, but I felt very proud there and then. But further than that - this is probably the moment to express it publicly – I am very proud/excited to be part of the group at the stage we are now and I am sure we will come out at the end of our plan as a very, very strong content marketing player. IF YOU WEREN’T DOING WHATEVER YOU DO NOW, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE DOING? I really feel like saying I would be doing exactly the same, but I cannot say that I suppose. So, I would probably be more involved with education, which I believe to be one of the most important industries out there. I would be making sure that my time and effort results in the empowerment of fellow Humans, regardless of their social status, age, or availability to pay for access to knowledge. TELL US ONE THING THAT WE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT BART JACQ... When I was 18 I travelled for half a year here in Europe and North Africa on my own, with very little money, no phone, no facebook, no plan, no route. It was fantastic. FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE IF... I think the world is becoming a better place at an exponential rate, and I say this in the sense that the individual, the voter, the employee, the little guy (basically) has now a wider range of tools and channels to defend his rights / expose his problems / share his projects. So, probably (and I am surprised myself with this answer), the world would be a better place if all Humans had access to the Internet and social media. FINAL THOUGHT: FANTASY WORLD CUP FINAL MATCH UP? It’s the final game of the tournament. Portugal and Argentina are playing against each other. The score is 2-2 and we are nearly reaching extra time when Ronaldo grabs the ball in the midfield, dribbles past 2, 3, 4 players before he accelerates towards the goal facing only the goalkeeper. Almost as if the world has gone into slow motion, you see Ronaldo preparing to shoot, his leg is up, the whole body is well balanced, his boot is now about to hit the ball, the slow motion effect goes away, the ball leaves his feet, dammmmn it’s going fast, you blink, and booooooom, Portugal are Worrrrrrrrld Champioooooons!
