By Staci Cretu, M.S., Marketing and Communications Manager, Olivia Geyer Marketing Coordinator Morgan Williams Graphic Design/Marketing Assistant Sales Staff Aaron Corcoran Account Executive For our first issue of The Satellite Review, I chose to title this letter, “A Road Less Traveled” because at one time warehouse automation was just that – a road less traveled by many manufacturers and distributors in the U.S. However, over the past several years, we have seen this once vacant road toward automation traveled by more companies. Now, with the rising customer demand, companies are facing a crossroads, to automate or not, in order to stay competitive. Andy Stewart Account Executive The challenge at hand is that customer expectations change in months, not decades. Consumers are expecting higher quality products and service with quicker delivery times. For manufacturers and distributors this means investing in supply chain equipment and systems. Faced with everyday operational challenges such as containing operational costs, improving responsiveness and increasing capacity and production capabilities, companies are looking towards automation to accommodate changing business conditions and customer expectations. Management Today, we are seeing an increase in companies that are implementing warehouse automation via Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS). This shift is due to growth in competition and increasing pressure to reduce costs as well as keeping better track of inventory. Companies are adopting this technology into their operations to increase productivity and overall operational efficiency in an effort to improve order fulfillment and meet customer demands. Robert Douglas Service Manager A true supply chain innovation, AS/RS combines a mix of innovations, existing processes and technologies in a way that achieves a desirable change in cost, quality and service for our end users. The acceptance of AS/RS technology has increased due to the technical advancements made in applications, business logic and cost justification, amplifying the adoption of this technology in order to stay competitive. As I began writing this letter, I realized that the road to automation is no longer a road less traveled.
