8 Saltus Stage
With floor rehearsals now under way for the school musical "Chicago", Saltus Stage takes a look at how the production is taking shape......
Q: How are rehearsals going for Chicago?
M: They’re going great so far. It’s really cool to see all of the pieces slowly coming together. Obviously we haven’t covered everything, but we’re getting there and so far so good from what I’ve seen.
Q: What is the choreography like? Is it really advanced?
M: It’s amazing. Ms Gray- our choreographer- understands that it would be hard to perform heaps of tricks whilst singing and I think that there is a great balance between the two for the entire cast. The great thing about the choreography is that Ms. Gray adjusts the moves to suit the dancer or chorus member according to their experience and skill. She still challenges people, but within their comfort zone so they don’t feel too awkward whilst on stage.
Q: What do you think about the cast this year?
M: I think the cast is really great and well-rounded for the most part. We have really strong characters and chorus members who are really enthusiastic and are very committed.
Q: What’s it like working with Ms. Jones?
M: Excellent! Ms Jones has an amazing opinion on the set moods and emotions that the character is conveying. She knows exactly what she’s looking for; we know exactly what we need to work on and how to do so.
Q: What is your favourite song to perform in the musical?
M: Probably ‘All That Jazz’; it’s just a huge number that involves most of the cast. The whole ambiance of that number is really cool and alluring to the audience and gets everyone really pumped for the rest of the show.
Q: How do you think the actual show will be in February?
M: Hopefully if progress continues like it is now than it will be really good. What’s really exciting is that we will have: a proper band, a really unique stage, sound and lighting and it will be in our hall. I’m hoping that everyone who comes to watch it in the next few months will think we did a good job!
Chicago hits the stage February 27th, 28th, March 1st, with tickets beginning onsale in January.
