Introduction
After Florida became a United States territory on March 30th , 1822 , President James Monroe was on the verge of making a crucial decision . With Florida no longer in the Spanish Empire ’ s grasp , Monroe ’ s decision had the potential to cement the United States ’ presence in the Western Hemisphere . Shortly after the end of the American Revolution in
1783 , the flames and fervor of rebellion were spreading throughout Latin America and as a result , the Spanish Crown ’ s foothold was waning . This situation presented an opportunity for the United States . After the War of 1812 and decades of being economically dependent on Europe , a weakening Spanish Empire meant that the United States could dream of a future where Europe ’ s interests did not interfere with theirs .
