CALEN D AR EVENTS IN CYPRUS June-July 23–24 July Platres Herb Festival Travelling Stage Paphos This is a multicultural program creat- ed by Pafos 2017 that takes place in dif- ferent places in Paphos with ensembles from Greece, France and Spain and the Balkans. The Stage that travels is a tool for transporting and presenting events at conventional and unexpected places, aim- ing to reach a mass audience. The Platres herb festival takes place at the Cultural Centre of Platres and Pla- tres’ Main Square. Its purpose is to dem- onstrate the beneficial properties of the Cypriot herbs, which are in abundance in the Troоdos area (674 different species), to people’s health through herbal exhibi- tions, herb tasting, educational seminars, an entertainment show & organised herb- al walks and visits to botanical gardens. This annual event provides outdoor/ indoor concerts and entertainment in- cluding dance, theatre and music, film screenings and poetry by national and international talents at various town ven- ues throughout July. LOCATION: Larnaca www.larnaca.com/v/festivals/ July-August Ancient Greek Drama Festival July 1st, 2017 – January 1st, 2018 20 Every year in July & August, ancient theatres in Cyprus host one of the great- est festivals of ancient Greek drama recreating stories written by prominent ancient playwrights such as Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes in modern times. The month-long festival welcomes several international theatre companies to present one performance each, either in Ancient or Modern Greek. A short description of the plot is provided in English as well. Every year, the festival attracts thousands of Cypriot and foreign audiences. Events take place in Limas- sol, Paphos and Nicosia under the aegis of the Cyprus Tourism and the Cyprus Theatre Organisations. LOCATION: Limassol, Paphos & Nicosia www.cyprusevents.net/annual/ cyprus-annual-events 23–29 July Koumantaria Festival The Koumantaria or Commandaria Fes- tival is celebrated in Laneia village, one of the 14 villages in a small area in the Troodos Mountains producing the signa- ture Cypriot Commandaria Wine. Com- mandaria is a sweet amber-coloured dessert wine made from sun-dried grapes using the Xynisteri and Mavro varieties. It is thought to be the world’s oldest named wine still in production, dating back to 800 BC. The annual week-long festival draws many crowds each year, both locals and tourists alike to Laneia. The festival programme includes Greek and traditional Cypriot revelry, traditional Cypriot delica- cies & as much Commandaria as you’d like at the ‘Old Linos Winery’.
