How Employment Is Distributed by Nationality Over Time( 2012 – 2024)
PAGE 01 THE OBSERVATORY

INTRODUCTION

The first part of this employment series examined the scale and structure of Gibraltar’ s labour market over the past decade, highlighting steady growth in total employment, the industries and occupations driving that expansion, and how overall labour market conditions have evolved. Together, it provided a long-term view of how employment in Gibraltar has changed and where the workforce stands today.
This second part turns the focus to the people behind those numbers. Using the most recent data, it looks at who fills Gibraltar’ s jobs, how employment is distributed across nationality, residency, gender, sector, and industry, and how these patterns relate to differences in average earnings. This analysis is a snapshot of Gibraltar’ s workforce at a moment in time. It presents the data without interpretation, inviting readers to consider how these patterns reflect their own experiences, whether viewed through the lens of gender, nationality, or a specific role within the labour market.

How Employment Is Distributed by Nationality Over Time( 2012 – 2024)

Over the past decade, total employment in Gibraltar has increased year on year. This chart focuses on how that growth has been distributed across nationality groups, showing changes in each group’ s share of total employment over time. The proportion of jobs held by Gibraltarians and Other British workers has gradually declined, while the shares associated with Spanish nationals, Other EU, and Other nationalities have increased, with the largest growth observed among Spanish workers. The share of employment held by Moroccan nationals has remained relatively stable throughout the period and continues to represent the smallest proportion of total jobs.
