Homo naledi is close in appearance to another homo species—the H. Erectus. However, it does not share enough traits to be considered a Homo erectus. It is for this reason that the homo naledi has been given its own name—the Rising Star hominin. A Rising Star hominin adult male is believed to have weighted between 100 and 110 lbs. The area in which the H. naledi was found is remote and very difficult to get to. The cavers that found the chamber were barely able to crawl into the cave, and scientists don’t believe that the H. naledi could have fit into the small passageways that lead to the Dinaledi chamber. This leads paleontologist to believe that there may have been a larger opening to the chamber in the past. They also believe that H. naledi didn’t live in the cave, but instead they used it as a burial ground for their dead. While the H. naledi is arguably not human, scientists find their behavior of burying the dead to be very intriguing. It has not yet been decided if the homo naledi is in fact the earliest Homo, but its discovery is certainly a breakthrough.
