SWAT - Did you know that Oak trees harbour more life than any other tree ?

One of the oldest and tallest trees in

Lainshaw Woods must be the old oak tree that stands in the space and light afforded by the river Annick at the crossroads of several paths . Like a number of other trees that loom vast and bountiful over the Annick – it clutches the sides of the river bank . Stand by its moss brushed trunk and look over the bend of the river at the cluster of motely huts and greenhouses that make up the allotment . I once saw a kingfisher here – a dart of blue across my path . How many people past and present have stood here and looked over this bend of the river by this particular oak tree ? Did a British or Polish soldier billeted on Lainshaw Estate during World War II stand here and gaze across the fields just as we do ? Probably .
To the left of this tree is the invaluable dead wood of a gnarled old beech tree . Saplings , fungi and bluebells grow in it – garnished by the odd glass bottle left generously for someone else – probably a SWAT member - to pick up . As autumn slides into
winter , and fears of the virus currently constrain our days , the woods endure . As does SWAT . Despite virus restrictions and unable to meet indoors , in recent months , we have planted trees , laid a path for wheelchair access , prepared the ground for wild flowers , cut back rhododendrons , gathered piles of used cans , bottles and coffee cups and maintained the path . We go on .

fenwick early childhood centre - building for the future

The Fenwick Early Childhood Centre ( ECC ) has been busy at work since moving into the school

building at Fenwick Primary School . The children have all settled in well to the new surroundings . The ECC has been preparing a new outdoor play area for the ECC children , which will also benefit the school children . A decking area is almost finished , which will soon house a wooden playhouse to provide a cosy area for children to enjoy story time and for imaginative play . This is being built under a shelter , with a newly felted roof . A sheet of perspex is also being inserted to let some natural light in to what will become essentially an outside extension of the ECC area within the school building . There are plans to lay some wood chipping , to make the ground less muddy and wet . A new wooden teepee has arrived , and the children have also been making nests for wildlife and enjoying play with some mud kitchens in the garden area . We are really looking forward to this work being completed , which will enhance the children ' s imaginative play and learning , and enjoying the outdoors safely .
