THE BOTHY BALLAD
The road is long the snow lies deep The firs like lanterns light the way Full moon a ' crest the Rhinns Of Kells The whytn ' d wynd to bid me stay The true adventure here beyond The paths of gloom I leave behind The sheiling glows in distant charm Never caring , never mind The candles glow it flickers fair To warm the cockles of my heart The boiling brose on fire hearth The Christmas cheer to start For every time I sit here still Before the rosy glow The Sheil o Castlemaddy song I ' ll sing To the Christmas bothy still I go
A very fond memory of leaving the chaos of Christmas and new year . Brothers fighting over toys Mother trying to get dinner ready . Father late home from the social club . Oh the joys . myself and a friend headed to the Galloway hills to The Shiel o Castlemaddy bothy . the winter hills , solitude , peace . a blissfull memory .
Many thanks to Jimmy Kirkland for sending us this selection of fantastic pictures
THE GHOST OF CHRISTMAS PAST
Twas a cold and sullen winter and the sky it fell like lead Another dreary working day of slavery and dread Out came a haunting melody I had to stand and stare His guitar seemed to empathise with the chill of the winter air
And as he played I recognised The saddest longing In his eyes
He was a man I ’ d known before from the days of working men Some say that illness took him he was never seen again And the song that he was singing of his struggles and his pain Told the empty streets a story of a life He ’ d lived in vain
And as he played I stood and cried For his song was mine I realised
