One of the biggest stories in Jefferson County baseball this year is the turnaround that the Ralston Valley Mustangs have been able to put together. The Mustangs had a shaky season last year, not performing to the level that everyone had hoped. This 2014 season has been a totally different story. The Mustangs are off to a speedy start with 9-1 record to start the season off. Their only loss was experienced in the championship of a tournament in Arizona over Spring Break, which was an extremely close game against a nationally ranked team. Another story coming from the Ralston Valley baseball team is senior pitcher, Jordan Holloway. Holloway, last year, wasn’t in the news at all; he was just another pitcher for a team that had been struggling. When the season kicked off and Holloway stepped on the mound, all of that changed. “He’s gained about 20 pounds of muscle, he has really improved on his arm strength and developing other pitches. He has really developed as a player.” This is coming from Daniel Jurney, a long time teammate of Holloway. Jurney is the catcher for the Mustangs, and has had a great deal of experience with Jordan pitching on the mound. Holloway is now expected to be drafted within the first few rounds of the upcoming MLB draft. He is being scouted every game he pitches, constantly being judged and rated by all of these big league teams. Holloway doesn’t seem to be scared or intimidated by this. In fact, he is very honest about his future potential. “I’m going to get drafted this year,” Holloway said, “and depending on how much money I am going to receive, I’ll decide on whether or not I want to go to college.” Holloway has already signed his letter of intent to the University of Nebraska-Omaha, but this deal can easily be backed out of if he gets drafted in the first few rounds of the MLB draft, and wants to go straight to playing professionally. Ralston Valley head coach Shane Freehling is extremely confident in his top pitcher’s skill. “Jordan has played great,” Freehling said. “He is 4-0, so he is among the state leaders in almost every category. He is among the best pitchers in the state of Colorado.” Hollowa 䁥́
