S tewarton woman Pauline McCreadie has just written her third book about the magical adventures of Stewarton’s own Edith Elf. As with the first two books, everyone associated with the book has given their time free of charge, so the only cost has been the printing, and all the proceeds from sales will be going to a local charity. £1400 has already been raised from Edith Elf ’s first two books. The third book is on sale now, price £5, and the charity to benefit this time will be the Stewarton Woodland Action Trust (SWAT). All of Edith’s fun adventures happen in and around Stewarton, and in this one, ‘Edith Elf ’s Riverside Adventure’, finds Edith saving the day on the bank of the river Annick. In the first book, Edith had her magical adventure in the library, and around the Stewarton shops, and the second book was a Christmas story. Pauline’s reason for writing ‘Edith Elf ’ stories goes back many years to when she was a child and her late dad, Stewarton man George Halliday, always told her amazing stories about a wee elf he'd invented. Sadly, Pauline’s dad passed away in 2014, so when she began writing her own children’s stories recently, the main character just had to be an elf, in memory of her dad. ‘Edith Elf ’ was born! Pauline decided she wanted to sell her books to raise funds for a good cause. But where to start? On a whim she contacted Alice Muir, who grew up in Stewarton, and had experience writing books. She and Pauline had become good friends on the Stewarton Facebook group Alice had started, called ‘Stewarton When We Were Growing Up Pauline McCreadie - Author Rachel Redfern - Illustrator Alice Muir - Editor and Now’ (SWWWGU). As it was for charity, Alice and her husband Jim said they would edit, and publish the book in their own time. But what would Edith look like? Another of Pauline’s Stewarton friends, Rachel Redfern, happily came on board, and has brought Edith to life with her bright and cheerful illustrations, which capture Edith and her adventures perfectly. The first book was called ‘Edith Elf ’s Adventures with Alice’ and came out in 2016. From its sales, over £700 was raised for the SANDS charity, which helps support families who’ve had a stillborn baby or lost a baby close to birth. In 2018, the second book, ‘Edith Elf ’s Christmas Adventure’, raised £700 for the BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION. Funds raised from this third book, ‘Edith Elf ’s Riverside Adventure’ will be donated to SWAT, the Stewarton Woodland Action Trust. SWAT has made so many marvellous improvements to the woodland, paths, park and riverside in and around Stewarton. ‘Edith Elf ’s Riverside Adventure’, written by Pauline McCreadie, illustrated by Rachel Redfern, and edited by Alice Muir is on sale now, price £5. It’s a great book for children aged 3 to 8.
