I
’
ve seen more bullfinches than usual in Stewarton this winter . With their black caps and scarlet breasts , they ’ re an underrated and striking bird . Unenchanted by mankind , they hide out in the scrub on the outskirts of the town ( as yet unbludgeoned by development ), or down near our tumbling Annick waters . I ’ ve also seen many long tailed tits . Pink and dainty , they snuggle together for warmth at night , and flit in clusters about the tree tops during the day . If you stop and watch them , they can seem surprisingly indifferent . tree project
We ’ re still laying down the roots of our tree planting project . Perseverance was the operative word as we sought consent for planting . As a layman unversed in the arts of land ownership , I initially found I ’ d unwittingly stumbled into an almost impenetrable labyrinth . However , things are looking up , as we now have the council ’ s permission to plant in four small areas in Stewarton . Watch this space for further details . litter pick day
Despite the pouring rain , our usual February litter pick went very well . 28 hardy people mostly from SWAT and from the allotment picked up rubbish from an area stretching from the Irvine Road to the railway station , and from there to Annick River that runs down past Springwell Place . We got drenched but collected about 40 bin bags full .
Many thanks to the allotment folk who turned up in such fantastic numbers despite the rain .
Many thanks to Gilmartin ’ s who gave us a discount for the coffee . Next time we ’ d like to see even more Stewartonians out . Could we reach 50 ?
