What made you want to get in to coaching ?
Louise : I played lots of tennis as a junior , competing at county level for South of Scotland . I ’ ve always had a love for the game and started coaching part time before becoming a full time coach a few years ago . I took the decision that I wanted to make a living doing something I enjoyed .
Brian : Having been lucky enough to play tennis from a young age and reach a fairly high standard , as a parent I wanted to introduce my children to the sport I had grown to love and let them experience the fun and enjoyment that could be had by playing the game .
Where has your coaching taken you apart from sunny Stewarton ?
Louise : I started coaching as a teenager in Ayrshire and took it back up in my early 20 ’ s when living in London . In 2014 , I was lucky enough to coach for 6 months in Mumbai , India introducing children to the LTA Mini Tennis programme . Before returning home to Scotland in early 2020 , I spent 2 years working at Bromley Tennis Centre , one of the most successful tennis facilities in the UK .
Brian : My coaching journey started in my home town of Kilmarnock before going on to develop my career at the David Lloyd Academy in Glasgow . Following that I was given the opportunity to be part of the Annabel Croft Tennis Academy in London and Cyprus . I was approached by a sports company based in India to support their quest to increase tennis participation in the country and subsequently spent 18 months developing a programme to allow many children to access tennis for the first time . On return to the UK , I worked as Head of Development at Bromley Tennis Centre in Kent for 5 years before being offered the Senior Coach position at the All England Club ( Wimbledon ).
What are the essential qualities to be a good coach ?
Louise : Patience , enthusiasm , experience , creating a fun and relaxed teaching environment .
