lish, and Science, so those can fill up rather quickly
and it becomes more difficult to put kids in these
classes as time passes.”
So not only do more students affect the teachers,
but also the majority of the staff here at RV. Since
all departments in the school work together, tipping
the scale out of balance by bringing in more students can have some serious effects.
The main question to be asked is why are so
many kids coming here?
The primary reason is all of the new housing
developments being built nearby.
According to Google Maps, the new Leyden
Rock housing area is a mere 2.6 miles away from
the school and the new Candelas housing area is
only 3.1 miles away.
With this new neighborhoods filling, RV may
receive hundreds of new students in the next few
years and we are already over capacity.
The housing developments are a major factor in
the increasing number of students. However, there’s
another factor that might not get as much attention
as it should.
“Surprisingly, even with new developments in
Leyden & Candelas, over 25% of incoming students
are still choice enrolled,” Halgren said.
Now why would so many kids be choice enrolled?
It’s simple: Parents really want their kids to
come to RV and why wouldn’t they?
According to Ross, Ralston Valley has a “98%
graduation rate.”
Halgren expanded on that fact stating that, “91%
of graduates go to college.
It’s a simple fact. Our high test scores and great
success stories are the reason so many students want
to come here. It’s our reputation that builds up the
population and our class sizes are only going to get
bigger as time goes on.
So what’s the plan to accommodate the new
growth?
A new school? Temporary buildings? No more
choice enrollment?
As of now there are no plans in place at the district level to deal with this overcrowding situation.
With new neighborhoods on the rise and the desire to attend RV at an all-time high, you may be out
of a desk sooner than you think. R
