Alpha Thistle
Explorer Scout
Unit - Happy
New Sunday
First Birthday!
evenings at
John Knox
could be
for you!
Alpha Thistle Explorer Scout Unit
(ATESU) based in the Stewarton,
Dunlop area is now 1 year old!
Explorer scouts celebrated their
first birthday with fun and games
plus some reflection on the year.
The Explorer Unit has been a big
success and thanks are due to those
that have helped to support and
finance the Unit.
ATESU would therefore like to
thank Sainsburys (Stewarton) for
bag packing opportunities, Dunlop
Gala Committee, Dunlop Scout
Group and in particular Stewarton
Scout Group (20th Ayrshire) that
have hosted the Explorer Scouts
and provided a local meeting point
for local Scouts to Stewarton and
Dunlop area.
Justice secretary, Mr McAskil met
with our Explorer Scouts earlier in
the year at a funding initiative and
in the Minister’s words, described
the Explorer Scouts as “A credit to
themselves”.
The Explorer Leader, Gerry
McGeever would wish to thank
all of the Explorer Scouts in
Alpha Thistle for their continued
enthusiasm and to the various
leaders and assistants that have
made the unit a success over the
past year - Gordon McBeath,
Cameron Bell, David Morrison,
Gary Houlton, Stephen Brockbank
and Sandra Kerr.
“Sunday mornings
don’t work for me...”
“I have to work sometimes.”
“I’m away sometimes.”
“I have family commitments
sometimes.”
“I like to lie in on a Sunday!”
“...but I’ve been wondering
about church.”
If any of these are you, JK’s evening
services could help.
Every Sunday the church in the
High Street has a short informal
service at 6pm in the large hall. The
layout is cafe-style and starts with
tea, coffee and cake. The worship is
led by a band and there is teaching
that you can apply to daily life.
Funsheets are provided for children
coming along with their parents.
On the last Sunday of the month
they put on an event called Refresh.
Meeting in the church sanctuary,
there’s an opportunity to explore
different themes through music,
drama, multimedia and teaching
with worship led by the band. There
are activities laid on for those in P3
or under, for part of the service.

Donations Needed!
The Ayrshire Cancer Support
Charity Shop on Brown St. is
on the lookout for donations of
clothes, shoes, books and brica-brac. They even get money for
rags and old shoes and would be
grateful for any contributions.
It costs Ayrshire Cancer
Support over £5000 every 10
days to take patients for their
treatment so the income from
the shop is invaluable. Every year
they make over 1000 journeys
to Glasgow taking patients
for their daily treatment. The
goods sold in their shop enable
them to continue much needed
support for cancer patients and
their carers.
Pop into the shop at 3 Brown
Street, Stewarton or call on
01560 484375.
