or many, the start of a new year will usher in
a renewed commitment to maintaining active,
healthier lifestyles. The resolutions, however,
should focus not only on exercising more, but
exercising more intelligently.
“When you become more physically active, whether
it’s running, hiking or lifting weights, there’s an inher-
ent risk of injury,” said Donald Tomaszewski, director of
medical fitness at Valley Health LifeStyles.
To combat injury risk, it is advisable to lean on the
expertise of healthcare professionals. Newcomers at
Valley Health fill out the Physical Activity Readiness
Questionnaire (PAR-Q) to give licensed certified athletic
trainers like Tomaszewski the opportunity to craft
an exercise program tailored to the needs of each indi-
vidual.
“The selling point of a fitness assessment is to estab-
lish a baseline,” he said. “We’ll do it again in 3-6 months
and hope to see a change.”
Early progress is essential, he added, because people
are often quick to abandon workouts if they feel too
much discomfort. “Exercise is noxious to most people,”
Tomaszewski said. “They don’t like the intensity, and
they don’t like to feel pain. They wind up going through
the motions, but there’s no health benefit to that.”
To get clients off on the right foot, he emphasizes
the proper techniques for each exercise. “If you’re lifting
