C
hildren more than adults are
vulnerable to infectious diseases
— disorders caused by organisms
such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or
parasites. Young immune systems are less
effective in their ability to fight infections.
Children also have less control over their
environment and may be unaware of risks
and exposures, therefore, less likely to
make responsible choices to protect their
own health. Although the list of pediatric
infectious diseases is long, we will focus on
a few that have been in the recent spotlight.
MEASLES
Measles, also known as “Rubeola,” is an
infectious viral disease that spreads person
to person through the air in droplets when
someone coughs or sneezes. Before a vac-
cine for measles was introduced in 1963,
measles was a common illness, particularly
in children. Thanks to vaccination efforts,
by the year 2000, the disease was declared
eradicated in the United States. However,
recent outbreaks in communities that have
lower than the recommended vaccination
rates mean the disease is again active
in the United States and abroad. The rise
in the number of cases reported in the U.S.,
the greatest number since 1992, gives rea-
son to understand and protect our loved
ones against the disease.

out of 10 chance of contracting the disease

if exposed and not immune, making immunization crucial,” says Julia
A. Piwoz, MD, FAAP, chief, Section of Pediatric Infectious Diseases,
The Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital at Hackensack University
Medical Center. “Everyday activities like riding an elevator, spending
time in the waiting room at your pediatrician’s office or out shopping
can put your child at risk if not vaccinated.” Symptoms generally
appear in one to two weeks, but can occur up to 21 days after expo-
sure. “Two to four days before the classic rash appears, the child may
have a high fever and show signs of symptoms often referred to
as the 3 C’s — cough, cold and conjunctivitis — followed by a rash that
