Young immune systems are less effective in their ability to fight infections. Children also have less control over their environment and may be unaware of risks and exposures, therefore, less likely to make responsible choices to protect their own health. Although the list of pediatric infectious diseases is long, we will focus on a few that have been in the recent spotlight. MEASLES Measles, also known as “Rubeola,” is an infectious viral disease that spreads person to person through the air in droplets when someone coughs or sneezes. Before a vac- cine for measles was introduced in 1963, measles was a common illness, particularly in children. Thanks to vaccination efforts, by the year 2000, the disease was declared eradicated in the United States. However, recent outbreaks in communities that have lower than the recommended vaccination rates mean the disease is again active in the United States and abroad. The rise in the number of cases reported in the U.S., the greatest number since 1992, gives rea- son to understand and protect our loved ones against the disease. “Measles is highly contagious with a nine out of 10 chance of contracting the disease RWJ Barnabas HEALTH n Bumps and Bruises, Sniffling And Sneezing -- When Should Parents Worry? — Pages 10 & 11 PHOTO COURTESY OF ATLANTIC HEALTH SYSTEM Dr. Walter Rosenfeld, MD, chair of Pediatrics for Goryeb Children’s Hospital, advises parents to call their pediatrician first if they believe their child has measles or has been exposed to someone with measles. if exposed and not immune, making immunization crucial,” says Julia A.
