A Life-changing Approach
To Heartburn Relief
Breakthrough Procedure Performed Without Incision
I
f you struggle with chronic heartburn or acid reflux, a
new, breakthrough minimally invasive procedure may
improve the quality of your life and possibly free you
from long-term medication use.
Physicians with the Valley Center for Heartburn,
Reflux and GERD are offering a new procedure called
Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF) that is
performed without abdominal incisions.
This outpatient procedure offers selected patients
who suffer from heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux
(GERD) a less invasive approach compared to traditional
anti-reflux surgery.
The TIF procedure represents the next step in the field
of minimally invasive surgery for the treatment of GERD.
Benefits include:
! No scars, due to incisionless approach
! Less discomfort, since there are no skin incisions
! Can be revised if required
The TIF procedure is performed through the mouth
without incisions. A surgeon utilizes the EsophyX device
to reconstruct the valve between the esophagus and
the stomach and restore the body’s natural protection
against reflux.
“Chronic heartburn is more than just uncomfortable,”
said Dr. Robert Korst, Director of Thoracic Surgery. “The
same acid reflux that sparks heartburn symptoms can
also damage the delicate lining of the esophagus,
which can set the stage for a particularly lethal form of
esophageal cancer.”
“The TIF procedure bridges the treatment gap
between medication and more invasive surgery,” said
Dr. Melissa Bagloo, Medical Director of the Center
for Bariatric Surgery and Weight-Loss Management.
“Because the procedure is performed entirely through
the patient’s mouth, there are no abdominal incisions
and no scars from the procedure.”
In addition to Drs. Korst and Bagloo, the Center’s team
of physicians includes Dr. Omar Bellorin-Marin, and Dr.
Mark Shapiro. To make an appointment with a member of
the team, please call 1-800-637-1136 and choose option 1.
oes urinary incontinence
or overactive bladder
limit your activities? Do
you feel a bulge protrud-
ing from the vaginal opening? If
so, you are not alone. Pelvic
floor disorders affect 25 percent
of all women, but many are
not aware of the variety of
treatment options that are
available to them.
Pelvic floor disorders range
Cristina Saiz, M.D.
from pelvic organ prolapse
(dropped bladder), urinary incontinence (leakage) and
overactive bladder (urinary frequency and urgency),
among others.
They occur when a women’s pelvic floor — the muscles,
ligaments and connective tissue that provide support for
her internal organs — is weakened.
“Despite how common
pelvic floor weakness is,
