V
erywell Mind – a trusted source of information
on mental health by medical experts – estimates
16.2 million adults in the United States, about 6.7
percent of all adults in the country, have experi-
enced a major depressive episode in the past year. While
women exhibit a higher lifetime prevalence than men,
depression is common in both. Additionally, recent
studies show that almost one-third of this population
goes untreated.
Although the numbers seem staggering, mental
health, unlike other health conditions, still carries a stig-
ma along with a long list of misconceptions. But there’s
good news — medical experts are seeing an improvement
in the way this condition is perceived. “We are moving
in the right direction, thanks in major part to millennials
who have contributed to the acceptance of identity dif-
ferences,” says Dr. Peter Bolo, chair of the Department
of Psychiatry at Overlook Medical Center and on staff
at Chilton Medical Center. “There’s still a lot of work to
be done, but the shift is both fascinating and encouraging.”
Everyone, at some point in life, suffers from the
blues. Feeling sadness, loneliness or grief when you
go through a difficult life experience is part of being
human. But what if it’s more than that? For some,
depression can occur in association with multiple
stresses and losses, while others are prone to depres-
sion because of inherent tendencies and a family history
of the illness.
