T
he secret to staying fit is finding exercise
that you enjoy, that you will look forward to —
that at a bare minimum, you will not dread. For
many, this is cycling — whether it is road cycling
or spinning or some combination thereof. Many people
know at least one avid cyclist, and while it is easy to
tease about the funny outfits or the obsessive nature
of the riders themselves, it turns out that cycling can be
an enjoyable, accessible, safe form of exercise for most
people. Certainly, any activity that inspires the love,
devotion — and accessories and accoutrements -- that
cycling does, is worth exploring.
Alan Horwitz is a cyclist and 30-year member
of the Bicycle Touring Club of North Jersey (btcnj.com),
a volunteer organization that promotes active recre-
ation through group riding at all levels. It is the largest
bicycle club in the state, with a membership of 1500,
and it is for adults of all ages. Horwitz emphasizes,
“Concern for safety is often an impediment to cycling.
However, riding in an experienced group, such as the
Bicycle Touring Club, creates a greater amount of safety.
Members are all instructed on and obey the proper rules
of the road and cycling etiquette. The Club requires all
participants to wear helmets, and most choose to wear
reflective lights as well.” Horwitz notes that in addition
