board in the studio. Heart rate monitors
were just added, and the e-mail each cyclist
gets includes the heart rate zone. Barbato
notes that the “instructors are all trained
to guide a ride and gauge the participants’
progress, so that each rider works effec-
tively and safely.”
Of course, avid cyclists need a place
to buy and repair bikes and to load up on
gear. Westwood Cycle (westwoodcycle.
com) has been around over 70 years, and
it is a North Jersey favorite. The store is
owned by Mark Albert and has been in his
family since the 1960’s. Store Manager,
Dean DuBois, notes that the store caters to
everyone—from the road bike connoisseur
to those buying their child’s first bike.
DuBois is particularly enthusiastic
about the store’s comprehensive bike siz-
ing, which allows for adjustment of seats
and handlebars to the ideal height and
position, vis-à-vis the body’s contact points.
The store is proud of and well-known
for its Body Geometry (BG) Fit, which is
a comprehensive fit system that improves
the cycling experience by making rides
more comfortable, more efficient, and
increasing power.
“The BG Fit enables cyclist to ride faster,
for longer distances, and with better hill
power,” says DuBois. “The data learned
from the BG Fit can give a particular rider
their optimal geometry and this informa-
tion can be used to select a bicycle that fits
them best.”
The shop also merchandises indoor
cycling training equipment for year-round
riding and gear for spinning classes.
Whether you prefer cycling or spinning,
there is an opportunity for everyone to
increase his or her fitness on a bike this
year. Who knows -- before long, you may be
posting on Strava, a social media network
for athletes, which allows cyclists to track
and then share data about their rides with
other cyclists.
Take Control Over Anxiety Program
T
he Valley Hospital will host a free
community health program, Anxious
to Know…, on Wednesday, February
27, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at The Mahwah
Public Library, 100 Ridge Road, Mahwah.
Your heart beats faster, your chest
tightens, and it becomes harder to breath.
We’re all familiar with how stress and anxi-
ety feel because these are normal feelings
that everyone experiences now and then.
However, if anxiety is causing extreme fear,
worry or panic, and interfering with your
ability to conduct normal activities, such as
loss of sleep, then it could be the sign of an
anxiety disorder. It’s important to get help
if you’re experiencing symptoms.
There is no fee to attend this program, but
registration is required. For information or
to register, call 1-800-VALLEY 1 (1-800-825-
5391) or visit ValleyHealth.com/Events.
